Important Note

If sample cannot be delivered to the lab within 1 hour of collection suggest ordering Trich by NAAT or doing a physician performed microscopy.

Collection Method

  1. Collect discharge material with swab (pictured below). Note: Do not use a wooden shaft swab. 

  2. Place the swab in sterile container (such as a non-additive red top blood tube) with 1 mL of sterile saline (just enough to cover swab). 

  3. Break off the swab stick and leave the swab in the tube with sterile saline.  

  4. Transport to Lab immediately.

Reasons for Rejection

Limit:  1 Per Day                                      
Sample: 

 > 1 hour old (Trichomonas), No swab included in sterile container, Dry Swab (no sterile saline added). 
Collection Device:  Wooden shaft swabs
